The Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development Honourable Premila Kumar, today handed over a brand new 9 ton Isuzu Compactor Truck to the Lami Town Council.

Whilst handing over the truck, the Minister said the new fleet, would certainly boost solid waste management services provided by the Council.

“Record shows that the Council is engaged in providing solid waste management services to ratepayers and business houses within Lami Town, 17 informal settlements in and around Lami Town and a village. Moreover, from August 2018, Lami Town Council had taken over the collection of solid waste management services, which was once under the Navua Rural Local Authority,” said Honourable Kumar.

The Minister also added that the Fijian Government has been assisting Lami Town Council in improving its service delivery and will continue to do so.

“Government provided $540,000 in 2015 for the upgrading works of Tikaram Park and in 2016, further contributed $197,000 for the preliminary upgrading works at Johnny Singh Park. Under the 2018-19 Budget, Government allocated $250,000 for the commencement of the Lami market concept design works, while $50000 was allocated for the upgrading of storm water drains in Lami Town. And to support extension services for Lami Town Council, a sum of $100,000 was allocated by the Fijian Government,” Honourable Kumar stated.

The Minister further added that Government will continue to provide support and assistance to the Lami Town Council, with the belief that the Council will in turn, provide even better services to its stakeholders.

“Effective service delivery remains a key priority and all Municipal Councils will be work closely with the Government with the aim, to continuously improve service delivery to all its stakeholders. With this new compactor truck assisting you in your service delivery, I request that you put it to good use, look after it well and ensure that it is maintained at all times,” elaborated Honourable Kumar. The 9 ton Isuzu Compactor Truck, which is valued at $240,000, is the second compactor Truck for Lami Town Council. It will be used to provide solid waste management services.
